JESSICA PHILLIPS-SILVER
Music Neuroscientist
Founder of Growing Brains
I first met Jessica in June 2018 at a kid’s birthday party! As a mother, I was immediately intrigued by her line of work. Jessica has been researching the effects of music on childhood brain development for over 20 years. Jessica partners with professional arts organizations, schools and hospitals to teach about the science and art of music in development, in education and in healing.
MDP: Jessica, when we met you told me that you hadn’t considered having professional images taken for you and your business. Why was that?
JPS: Two reasons. First, my business was still new and I didn’t think I was “ready” for so many professional images--I felt like that should come later.
Second, I had no idea of the range of images that I would eventually need. I didn’t understand what it meant to “tell my story” in photos--but talking with you, I started to understand how important it was to represent my brand visually. Then when it came time to getting my website up, it was a huge help--because I had a whole range of personal images to choose from that made sense for me and my brand.
MDP: So what was it that made you decide to hire me to photograph you for your brand and your business?
JPS: Melissa It was really the way that you helped me to understand what brand development required, and how it is accomplished, that made me want to work with you. I quickly understood that what I was getting from you was MUCH more than photographs--it was an introduction to personal branding. Another photographer might have expected me to show up knowing exactly what I wanted and why; but you helped me to learn what I needed and why--that was helpful in so many ways. Once I understood the purpose, it helped me to become more clear about what I have to offer and why it is valuable.
MDP: How does having professional images make you feel?
JPS: Having professional images makes me feel more like the professional that I am! It's funny because I have been using beautiful images for a long time in my public talks and teaching, but it had never occurred to me to be crafting my own images. Now, that is a big part of my inspiration. My clients appreciate images that reflect who I am and the work that I do.
MDP: What would you tell people who might be on the fence about booking a Personal Brand Photography session?
It feels like a huge, scary investment before you do it; but after, you realize how much you have to gain from it. It's the beginning of a more clear, focused and professional brand.
MDP: What is next on the horizon for you?
JPS: Well, you and I have already begun working on brand videos, which I will make available on my website and share with my clients. I also look forward to producing an online course.
MDP: If someone wants to learn more, how can they find you?
JPS: People can find me on my website here: https://www.growingbrains.co/
