A lot of people tell me that they recognize my images when they see them on social media. Of course, I am very flattered but even more than that, I consider it a WIN in terms of my brand because it means I have no “real” competition.
Let me go deeper on this for a minute.
I have two friends who are also personal brand photographers. They both have different styles and very different ideal clients.
One is much more family-oriented and her photographic style is light, airy, and nature/outdoor focused. The other works with public figures and celebrities. She tends to use posing more in her work and you’ll probably never catch her without heels on. 🙂 Her work lends itself to sophistication and a bit of glamour.
If you know me, you know that my style is bright, vibrant, fun, and sometimes silly – a lot like who I am in my own life.
So you can see there are very big differences between our styles and personalities AND whom we serve. If I tried to mimic what my brand photog friends do, it would be a disaster!
- First, I would confuse my audience and they would stop trusting me.
- Second, I wouldn’t really be able to create images that would look the same anyway.
- Third, I would not be attracting the kinds of clients I want to work with the most.
Leaning into who I am, why I’m different, rather than trying to look at other people and mimic what they’re doing, is what makes my brand strong! It means I really have no competition!
Our expertise, our personalities, and our experiences make us different from anyone else. There is no one on earth that is exactly like you. USE that to your advantage and proudly show your uniqueness to the world.
