Branding and getting messy
Roller skating and a mug of chocolate milk don’t mix. My daughter figured that out pretty quickly when trying to maneuver through our kitchen on wheels.
“I HATE roller skates!” she exclaimed.
So, of course, I had to tell her for the thousandth time that we all make mistakes, and no one learns without making mistakes, and no one is perfect when they try something for the first time…blah, blah, blah…
As I helped her clean up the chocolaty mess, it occurred to me that getting messy is exactly what we all must do as entrepreneurs.
Of course, we want things to be “right” when we begin. We want it to be all figured out and then we can just focus on serving all our wonderful clients.
Branding Process
The problem is that building your dream business requires a deep understanding of your brand and understanding that branding is a process; it’s not a set-it and forget it process.
Figuring out your brand is a messy process at first. Lots of brainstorming and connecting the dots. Experimenting and trying on things. Throwing out the things that don’t work and honing in on the things that do.
Then, as you grow and your goals expand and change, your brand does too!
The cool thing is that if you make branding a priority in your business, so many things become easier. Making decisions on new services to offer, whom you should hire, what content you should create, how you should invest in your business – all of these things and more can be decided using your brand as your guiding light.
I’m a couple of weeks into my own re-brand, and boy, does it feel messy. I’m struggling with my own feelings of wanting things to be “right” and done. But I know that’s not how it works and that this is all part of the bigger journey.
To keep me on my path, I keep giving myself the same pep talks I give my daughter but, fortunately, without the milky mess. 😊
So, this new year we have all been given – isn’t it the perfect reason to embrace your mess, re-discover your brand and start realizing your business dreams too?
Shall we get messy and get branding?
