According to cognitive psychologist Jerome Bruner, humans are 22 times more likely to remember a fact when it has been wrapped in a story.
Why is this exactly?
When you begin listening to a story that really resonates, you become lost in it. You can almost feel like you are inside the scene yourself.
If the story is really good, you can almost forget about the present moment and feel like you are in a totally different place and time.
Often, when I hear a great speaker telling a story about their life and then tie that story to the message they want to teach to their audience, I’m in awe of their ability to draw me in like that. To make me sit on the edge of my seat, eager to hear more.
Captivating Your Audience
As a speaker, maybe you have spent time honing your storytelling ability and can really captivate your audience when you are on stage. When you are telling your story on stage, your audience begins to learn a little bit about you, begins to like you and trust you as the expert in your space.
But, what about offstage? How much time have you spent using storytelling to grow your brand when you aren’t standing in front of a live audience?
Consider this: while event organizers are definitely concerned about your experience and whether you are the right subject matter expert for their stage, they ALSO want to know that you will connect with their audience.
Guess what? You can SHOW them you WILL connect with their audience.
How?
Why Storytelling Images Are Important
Well…let’s take the example of a client of mine who is an expert in the field of music neuroscience. She wants to speak to audiences full of parents about how music and dance can help parents and children connect on a deeper level.
Before we worked together, the only images she had to show were a professional headshot and images of her speaking to audiences on stage.
BUT, now she ALSO has images of her dancing and playing instruments with kids? Can you see the impact that will have on her online audience! The STORY of how she helps parents and children connect better really makes her stand out as the EXPERT in that space.
How about you? What stories are you ready to tell your online audience?
