As I was preparing for my speech, I felt super nervous.
I mean, I spent all this time preparing my speech, putting together my slides and practicing but yet, I still felt a little sick inside at the thought of standing up in front of everyone.
The day before the speech, I practiced numerous times and I felt pretty well prepared but that did not stop the butterflies in my stomach. Neither did that glass of wine with dinner that night.
Driving to the event on the morning of my speech and still feeling uncertain despite the fact that I felt prepared, it suddenly hit me like a 2 by 4! Oh yeah, “it’s not about me!”
As someone that talks all about the power of a personal brand, you might be surprised to hear me say that, right?
The Real Purpose
But, you see, I realized at that moment, I was thinking more about my performance and whether I would remember everything I wanted to say and I had forgotten the MOST important thing. That the number ONE reason I chose to accept that opportunity to speak was to SERVE my audience.
I wanted people to walk away from my presentation feeling like they had more insight into how to connect with their target audience. I wanted to have a positive impact and I wanted to help THEM!
Once I remembered that my purpose was to serve, I felt so much more confident. I KNEW that even if I forgot a point or two or I fumbled a sentence, I would still be able to help my audience see opportunities for themselves and their business they may never have considered possible.
How Your Personal Brand Relates
When it comes to building a personal brand, here’s where it gets a little tricky. While it’s not about you, it IS about you becoming more visible and being more intentional.
Let me see if I can break this down:
• You want more/better clients and speaking opportunities
• Before that happens, your audience has to trust you
• Before they can trust you, they have to get to know you and understand why you are different
• In order for your clients/audience to get to know you, you must show up consistently in an intentional way
• In order to show up online consistently, you must have content and images that connect with your target audience
So, while it isn’t really about you – your personal brand isn’t about bragging and showing off – it IS about you figuring out what stories and themes ABOUT you will help your audience get to know you, begin to trust you and then want to hire you!
As for my presentation…it went GREAT! Thanks for asking. 😊
